Apple will stop supporting TLS 1.0 and 1.1 starting with iOS 15 and macOS 12

Apple TLS

Apple continues to drop support for Transport Layer Security 1.0 and 1.1 in its operating systems.

TLS 1.0 and 1.1 have been deprecated in iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8, macOS 12 and tvOS 15. Support for these protocols will be removed in future releases.

The first step Apple has taken on the road to greater security was to move Safari to TLS 1.2 and 1.3 in 2020. These changes appeared in the beta releases of iOS 13.4 and macOS 10.15.4.

The company advised developers whose applications still work with older versions of the TLS protocol to start a gradual transition to TLS 1.2 or higher. TLS 1.3 was officially approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) back in March 2018.

Microsoft, Google, Apple and Mozilla are supporting a joint effort to move towards secure versions of TLS. In August 2020, Microsoft started to include TLS 1.3 by default in fresh Windows 10 Insider builds.

Legacy TLS configurations can be exploited by attackers to gain access to private data.
